清朝初年设置江南省。它的辖地范围为现今的、安徽、浙江、福建、江西、湖南等地。以后，江南省辖地缩小到江苏、安徽两省，至1723年(元年)江南省被撤销，辖地复归江苏、安徽两省。江南省铸造铜币历史不长，待江南省所铸的铜币在市面上流通之时，江南省早已不复存在了。故它是我国货币史上惟一有省之名份而无实际省份的一种铜币。
