四川铜币军政府是由四川铜元钱币演变过来的，最早铜元清光绪二十八年(1902)，川督岑春煊始议铸造铜元。光绪二十九年(1903)六月，建立四川铜元局，其规模不大，仅就原购铸小制钱的废机修整使用．厂房是机器局的压铜厂和旧的铜钱厂，铸料是机器局的枪弹废壳边渣和宝川局余铜，圯炼净尽。按铜96%、铅0.1%及其他的比例配铸“当五”、“当十”铜元。所铸铜元悉用紫铜,量较好。以致四川铜元成为全国铜元特点之一。

军政府造四川铜币是辛亥革命时期的产物。1911年12月发生“成都叛乱”,以尹昌衡、罗纶为正副都督的四川军政府取代了建设仅12天的大汉四川军政府。新的四川军政府建设之初即面临着需用日繁、度支日绌的财政困窘时势。军政府迅速接受了四川成都造币厂,决议铸造“四川铜币”以应急。民国元年（1912年）4月,四川成都造币厂奉四川军政府之命,开模铸造“军政府造四川铜币”（也称“汉”字铜元）。

与孙像开国纪念币和袁像银元比起来，军政府造四川铜币流通范围较窄，发行量与存世量自然无法与前二者相比。由于这个原因，接触川洋的人比较少，研究者更少。但这并不表示川洋的研究价值和市场价值不高，向来经济规律和收藏首要以“物以稀为贵”定律为标准。作为特殊历史时期、地方政权的特殊货币，军政府货币具有军用货币和民用货币的双重职能，是历史的产物，具有不可替代的文物价值，是历史的见证。

1914年2月8日，国民政府公布发行1种5分镍币。民国24年时又发行了5分、10分、20分3种。当时，省内市场流通使用镍币较少，直到1936年时，中央银行才运来了第一批镍币1万元。因数量不多，不够分配。后运到的第二批镍币有5万元，币值有5分、10分、20分3种。其中，5分币有2万元，10分币和20分币各1.5万元。1935年11月，国民党政府宣布实行法币政策，禁止银元在市面流通。随后发行可在市场上流通的21种版别的镍币；但其实早在1935年初，民国政府已经委派美国费城造币厂铸造伍分，拾分，廿分的镍币每种11枚，送交国民政府呈递样品。国民政府时期制币事宜多与美国方面往来，如中央造币厂之筹建，开工后之管理等皆得力于美方。1935年末，上海中央造币厂正式铸造镍币。
