淳化元宝是我国最早的御书钱，也是最珍贵的佛寺供养钱。淳化是北宋太宗年号。这批淳化元宝金钱，背铸佛像，造型奇特，显然是当时皇室专门铸造并敬奉五台山寺庙的供养钱。像这样成批的金质佛寺供养钱在我国还是首次发现，因而具有很高的历史价值和文物价值。

 

       山西五台山乃我国四大佛教名山之一，是举世闻名的佛教圣地。1988年春天修建佛塔时挖出一批淳化佛像金钱，黄金质地，成色在90%以上。钱径2.4厘米，厚0.12厘米，穿径0.5厘米，每枚重约12克。正面钱文为行书“淳化元宝”四字，背面铸有左立、右坐两尊佛像。坐佛背部有佛光屏，立佛为韦驮，手持如意。两尊佛像下均有莲花座。佛像造型逼真，体态栩栩如生。佛身立体隆起钱面0.2厘米，五官清晰可辨。淳化元宝其价值之高，不仅是因为其上图案雕刻精美，同时也因其背面神态逼真的两尊佛像解说之谜。关于栩栩如生的钱背造像的解说向来多有纷纭，坐像多认系观音，立像则有善财童子及韦驮等说。
