“周元通宝”始铸于周世宗柴荣显德二年（公元955年），世宗柴荣废天下佛寺3336座，毁佛像铸钱，解决了当时国中钱币缺乏的困难。其正面钱文为“周元通宝”，沿袭“开元通宝”的形制和书体，仅改“开”为“周”，背部多铸有星月纹等标记，同时也出现了多种图案、大小不一的花钱，其中以龙凤图案较多。
“周元通宝”是五代时期铸行最多、质量最好的铜钱。当时铜材紧缺，周世宗便下令毁佛铸钱，但遭到佛教徒和满朝大臣的反对。可周世宗柴荣，搬出了“舍身饲虎”的典故，他说佛是造福众生的，假如他活者，为了救人，他的真身都可毁去，又为何舍不得铜像呢？此番言论，说得反对者哑口无言，只好服从。
