道光时期的年号天下太平宫钱分大小两种，小型为早期所铸，工艺风格上还留有一丝乾隆嘉慶朝的韵味，但做工用料上以大不如前朝，就算是进呈样钱或是母钱也偶会出现镜面砂眼、流铜等状况；而晚期所铸的大型天下太平钱则明显偷工减料，观其存世之品普遍也多有流铜砂眼的问题，文字风格也不见皇家威严。可见当时因国家动荡给各方面都带来了严重影响，道光皇帝一生提倡节俭，所穿衣物需下水三遍方可更换（乾隆皇帝所穿衣物都是不下水的）。这些也都引领了全国的“节俭”之风。

道光时期除了年号天下太平宫钱，还出现了八卦天下太平宫钱和年号八卦宫钱。八卦天下太平宫钱尺寸规格制作工艺和道光通宝天下太平风格一致，应同为道光早期宫钱。宫钱所用其后天八卦图也有万物复苏循环，扭转乾坤之意。
