1911年辛亥革命胜利，清帝被迫退位，孙中山等人成立了中国民国。同时，颁布的政令中指出要另刊新模，鼓铸纪念币。因此，武昌和南京两处造币厂铸造了中华民国开国纪念币，其中以铜元辅币，以十文面值的为主，在全国大量发行，目的在于取代清朝铜元。
民国14年，国民政府又在广州建立，民国15年迁武汉，民国16年(公元1927年)定都南京。为纪念国父孙中山丰功伟绩，基地所铸钱银均用国父像，南京、天津诸造币厂于民国16年、17年从头许多铸造中华民国孙像开国纪念币。银元正面及不和基本上与前品相同，而支配上方摆放六角星。由于该币正不和图像比照规范，中英文没有过错，又设置六角星，故称其为通常六角星版。上图所展示的中华民国开国纪念币正本便是六角星版。
