古籍是中国古代书籍的简称。古籍善本，清版本目录学家张之洞的解释为：一是足本，没有删节和缺卷;二是精本，精校精注，错误极少;三是旧本，即传世很久的木刻本、传抄本和线装书。目前所说的艺术品市场上的古籍善本，则主要包括刻本、墨迹本、碑帖、印谱、信札以及其他文献。

前不久，“册府千华—民间珍贵典籍收藏展”在国家图书馆展出，展品年代上至隋代写经，下至清代内府抄本，115件珍贵典籍出自30位民间收藏家之手。大部分收藏者并不愿暴露自己的身份，藏品珍贵程度却足以达到“国宝”级的水平。非文化领域人士纷纷入手典籍收藏，固然与的精神追求有关，其实更与近年来古籍善本不断升高的文物价值和市场价值有着密切关系。

在拍卖市场上，古籍善本一直是个小众化的收藏门类，收藏人群、总体数量和整体价格都不能和书画、瓷器等热门收藏门类相比。20多年前，古籍拍卖会尚未出现，古籍书店是这类收藏品的主要流通渠道。那时花10万元人民币即可拿下一册宋版书，元版书的价钱更低，平均每册才1万元。时至今日，古籍价格早已是另一般光景。由于整体艺术品市场的火爆，也带动了原本一直不温不火的古籍善本行情，上升趋势有目共睹，一批古籍珍本屡屡打破拍场纪录。

“古籍收藏要耐得住寂寞。”沈津认为，跟字画、瓷器等古玩不同，古籍善本既不能挂在墙上欣赏，也不能拿在手上把玩。没有一定的文化素养，没有相当的历史知识和古汉语功底，读通都不可能，更不用说读懂或者钻研它的版本。“当然也有人把它放在书橱里，当成摆设，作为附庸风雅的表现，但书终究是用来读的。”
