开元通宝为唐代货币。钱币在唐代始有“通宝”。唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年，为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。最初的“开元通宝”由书法家欧阳询题写，面文“开元通寳”，形制仍沿用秦方孔圆钱，规定每十文重一两，每一文的重量称为一钱，而一千文则重六斤四两。
 

原来唐高祖李渊称帝后，在武德四年七月宣布废止隋五铢，发行唐朝的新钱“开元通宝”，简称开元钱或通宝钱。开元即“开国奠基”之意；通宝则是“流通宝货”之内涵。同时为了表示自己的恩宠，原本不允许私铸的开元通宝，唐高祖却特许秦王李世民、齐王李元吉可以各铸三炉，开国功臣裴寂可以铸一炉。而当时负责铸造开元通宝的欧阳询在进上蜡样给秦王时，彼时的秦王妃日后的长孙皇后在观赏时无意中留下了一掏甲痕。就这样，带有甲印的蜡样被翻成钱模，再铸成钱，铸好的钱背就留下了一道月亮形状的指甲纹，也就是后来的开元通宝背月钱。此枚钱币就是背"月"版，保存至今品相十分不错，实属收藏界中的"罕见钱币"。
