清咸丰年间(1851-1861年)，太平天国农民起义开展迅猛，并在江苏南京建都，此刻清政府赖以铸钱之用的滇铜，因路途阻断而无法运进北京。一方面是打压起义急需许多的军饷开支，一方面是铸钱的原材料告缺，给清政府造成了严峻的财务困难，最终迫使清政府自咸丰三年开端发行纸币和改铸大钱来补偿财务亏空。咸丰朝宝泉局所铸钱有“当百”、“当二百”、“当三百”、“当五百”、“当千”等五种面值。
