1858年9月，法国人在越南中部的岘港登陆，要求在岘港设立领事馆等，被越南政府拒绝，法国因此而佔领岘港。1861年，法国佔领了西贡（今胡志明市），六年后又佔领了南圻，并将其更名为交趾支那。为了拥有整个越南的宗主权，法国与中国爆发中法战争，并在1883—1885年的期间佔领了越南中部和北部及柬埔寨，将越南中部更名为安南，北部更名为东京。1885年，中法签订天津条约，大清正式放弃越南的宗主权。1887年10月，法属印度支那联邦正式成立。随后在1893年的法暹战争（暹为暹罗，即泰国）中，老挝也被收入法属印度支那联邦之中。虽然法国拥有中南半岛地区的实际统治权，但之前各王国的皇室仍被当作傀儡一般地被保留。在19世纪末到20世纪初的一段时间内，法属印度支那曾经爆发过数次反抗法国殖民统治的战争，但都被法国统治者镇压下去。
