开元通宝是唐代的第一种货币，也是发行量最大和流通时间最长的货币，因为唐玄宗李隆基的年号为开元，而我国古代的好多帝王在铸造货币的时候都喜欢把自己的年号加上去，所以就有人认为开元通宝为唐玄宗时期的货币，其实不然。
