皇宋通宝是古代钱币之一，宝元二年至皇祐末年北宋仁宗赵祯所铸的非年号钱币，钱文有篆书，楷书对钱，光背。有小平、折二两种，有铁钱。篆书中另有九叠篆者，极其罕有，为古泉大珍。将这种“九叠篆”用于钱文，在数千种古钱币中，“皇宋通宝”仅为孤例，故被历代收藏家视为稀世珍品。

皇宋通宝之九叠篆在版别众多的皇宋通宝钱币中，有一种俗称“皇宋九叠篆”的钱币尤为珍贵。九叠篆又称上方大篆，秦汉无此制，唐宋以来多用于官印上面。九叠篆是以小篆为基础，笔画反复折叠，盘旋屈曲，点画皆有纵横两个方向，填满空白部分，求得均匀。“曲屈平满”是九叠篆书法最大的特点。折叠多寡，每一个字的折叠多少，则视笔画繁简而定，有五叠、六叠、七叠、八叠、九叠、十叠之分。称之为九叠，“乃以九为数之终也，言其多也，”形容其折叠之多。关于皇宋通宝九叠篆的铸造背景，现今钱币学家一般认为该钱币为“置样钱”，或“开炉钱”，应不是正用品流通钱币。
