宽永通宝始于日本水尾天皇宽永三年，从第二年开始铸造发行，在当时日本铸币不受管制，大多地方均有钱炉铸币，这枚货币直至明治年初还在使用，在日本历史上足足240余年，终于德川幕府灭亡。宽永通宝钱在长期的中日贸易及交往中不断流入我国，至今在我国各地均有发现。据研究专家表明，在日本公元708年奈良元明天皇和同元年开始效仿我国唐朝开始铸币，所以采用了外圆内方的铸造样式，截止到19世纪60年代，外圆内方样币一共有32中，而宽永通宝就是其中的一款。在我国明代，实行了钞、银、铜钱并行制度，但由于铜钱的铸行严重不足，于是便允许唐、宋旧铜钱入流，这便为民间的私铸钱和流入中国的日本仿制钱的流通提供了条件。
