光绪元宝是大清光绪年流通大面值货币之首，是我国首批引进海外技术的印发流通货币，对于现今也蕴藏了一定历史意义。江南造币厂在开办之初全名“江南铸造银元制钱总局”，设备是向当时尚未改名伯明翰的英国喜敦造币厂订购，于光绪二十三年正式开铸。最初铸造的江南省造银币正面没有标注干支年度，泉界俗称老江南。自光绪二十四年岁次“戊戌”开始注明，一直到岁次“乙巳”止，计有老江南、戊戌、己亥、庚子、辛丑、壬寅、癸卯、甲辰及乙巳等九种年别，其中以己亥铸造量最少，被誉为江南光绪元宝之大珍。
