王铎（1592-1652），河南孟津人，字觉斯，号嵩樵，别号烟潭渔叟。他的书法以四十年为界形成两个阶段。对此，同代的傅山《字训》说：“王铎四十年前，字极力造作，四十年后，无意合拍，遂成大家”。前四十年，王铎处于广泛临习前世名帖的阶段、他精研六书古文字，钟鼎款识、秦汉碑文、历代法帖。四十岁后，尤其是五十四岁降清之后的他深感“补天乏术，出世无门”，在极度痛苦中，张扬一种“怪”、“狠”、“胆”、“力”的的审美原则，以抒发内心的深层矛盾冲突。这种“怪狠”美学及其书法用笔狂怪跌宕，笔画盘旋勾连，结体险奇欲坠，章法摇曳冲突，用墨或浓或淡，真可谓变化莫测，惊心动魄。其书蕴二王典雅秀润于汉碑颜字的刚健古朴之中，法度精湛，自然天成。清代张庚《画征录》说：“余于睢州蒋郎中泰家见所藏觉斯为袁石愚写大楷一卷，法兼篆隶，笔笔可喜。明季工书者推董文敏，文敏之半韵潇洒，一时固无有及者。若据此卷之险劲沉著，有锥沙而泥之妙，文敏当逊一筹”。我们从存世墨迹《游中条帖》、《临豹奴帖》、《万壑图卷跋》、《拟山园帖》、《琅华馆帖》中不难获得认同。
