咸丰重宝是清朝政府为筹款打压太平军，减轻财政危机，于咸丰三年开铸的大钱。当五十及以下计值称为咸丰重宝，高于当五十计值称为咸丰元宝，以区别于小平钱咸丰通宝。咸丰重宝有“当五”、“一十”、“二十”、“五十”和“一百”等版别。据悉，咸丰四年到五年间，根据户部要求，宝苏局在铸造当十大钱之后不久开始试铸当五钱，由于当时通货膨胀趋于严重，当五钱旋即停铸，所以存世量十分稀少，在市场上相对来说比较少见的钱币的价值则更高正。

咸丰重宝当十铜元是圆形方孔铜质钱币，其形状外发天，内地法，取义精宏，为难得一见的珍品古钱币。正面铸有楷书“咸丰重宝”四字，自上而下，从右至左而读；钱币背面有汉文“当十”上下排列标明币值，左右用满文写有钱局的名称。整枚钱币造型圆润端庄，字迹清晰深俊，包浆浑厚温润，是难得一见之收藏佳品。
