圆龙洋的由来：明治元年，日本由香港购得全套铸币机器（英国人的机器，1866至1868年曾在香港铸造过香港第一套货币），在大阪成立国家造币厂。明治三年，造币厂落成，马上开铸银圆。将“圆”定为日本的本位货币，即实行银本位制度，日本初铸银圆，其意是驱逐当时在日本大肆横行的本洋，鹰洋，统一货币。

后来明治十一年至三十年龙洋的铸造量逐步递增，进入了日本龙洋的黄金时代。相对于日本贸易银元，日本圆龙银元是近代流入我国的外国银元当中数量不多，也较为罕见的一个品种，因币面有飞龙图案，故在我国又称之为日本圆龙洋。
