日本“龙洋”早年在中国被称作“银洋”，它实际上是外国商贸银币在中国民间的一种简称。早在明朝中期，西班牙就已在墨西哥制造“本洋”银币(俗称“双柱”)，至清代乾隆、嘉庆年间，中国对外贸易日趋繁荣，从外国流入中国的银币种类也日渐增多，除“双柱”外，还有墨西哥“鹰洋”、英国“站洋”、印度爱猫扑.爱生活“坐洋”和日本“龙洋”等，其中以墨西哥“鹰洋”最为著名，而日本“龙洋”的影响则相对要小些。

明治元年(1868年)，日本由香港购得全套铸币机器(英国人的机器，1866至1868年曾在香港铸造过香港第一套货币)，在大阪成立国家造币厂。明治三年(1870年)，造币厂落成，马上开铸银圆。将“圆”定为日本的本位货币，即实行银本位制度，日本初铸银圆，其意是驱逐当时在日本大肆横行的本洋，鹰洋，统一货币。日本龙洋历时45年，直到大正三年(1914年)止。据统计，共铸造了34个年号的日本龙洋，依次是：明治三年、七年、八年、九年、十年、十一年至三十年、三十四年至三十九年、四十一年、四十五年和大正三年，累计铸造贸易银元约两亿枚。大日本明治八年的龙洋银币是极其罕见，后来明治十一年至三十年龙洋的铸造量逐步递增，进入了日本龙洋的黄金时代。
