康熙通宝按照背面文字可以分成两大类：一类是仿"顺治四式"的满文钱，钱背满文"宝泉"、"宝源"左读，是户、工两部所造；另外一类是仿"顺治五式"满汉文钱。

康熙年间，全国设有24个铸钱局，不同铸钱局铸行的钱币各不相同，将这24种钱币集齐即一套，从这24种钱币正面文字看，没有多大区别，皆为康熙通宝，其背文却各不相同，除户部宝泉局和宝源局为满文外，其它22种钱币均为满汉两文各有一字，其左为满文，右为汉文，这22个汉字代表22个铸钱局，若细分版别，还有一种康熙“罗汉钱”。

事实上“罗汉钱”是专为康熙皇帝60寿辰而铸的一种祝寿钱。康熙是清代在位最久的皇帝，长达61年，康熙52年（1713年）3月，正是他60大寿，特命户部宝泉局（当时的造币厂）精铸一批“万寿钱”作为寿辰纪念，钱币背面左右为满文“宝泉”两字，表示北京户部宝泉局制造。
