玉玺，专指皇帝的玉印，至高权力的象征，始于秦始皇。据[汉]蔡邕《独断》载：“天子玺以玉螭虎纽。古者尊卑共之…… 秦以来，天子独以印称玺，又独以玉，群臣莫敢用也。”

随着朝代更迭历史变迁，这种印章因为其自身的魅力深的人们的追捧，及至周朝，除了皇帝之外，上到王公大臣下到一些有点身份的达官贵族等均有篆刻个人私章。为了区别帝王与官员及贵族等身份的不同，把皇帝用的印称之为“玺”，而王公大臣及达官贵族的只能成为之印或章。
