战国的玉佩，原则上是一种统称，佩有组佩和单片玉佩之分，主要起装饰的作用，表示身份、财富、权利的象征，也是一种礼仪，表示君子风度，故有“君子无故，玉不去身”之说。从装饰的角度来讲，小到玉珠，大到龙形佩，都是佩挂的范畴。佩有时不仅仅是挂在身上，也起到挂在墙上装饰的作用。装饰玉可分为实用装饰玉和纯装饰玉，前者有玉梳、玉头簪、玉碟、玉带钩、玉带板等；后者除各种玉雕首饰之外，有随身佩戴的玉佩、玉坠玉勒子等。装饰玉主要以配饰玉为主。
