崇宁通宝是北宋徽宗赵佶崇宁年间(1102-1106年)始铸，年号钱。北宋徽宗在位25年，先后铸造了圣宋通宝、崇宁通宝（重宝）、大观通宝、政和通宝（重宝）、重和通宝、宣和通宝（元宝）等6种钱币，其中崇宁通宝和大观通宝的钱文是徽宗亲书的瘦金体，所以又称其为御书钱。被世人公认为中国铸币史上四个高峰期之一，它从币材、铸造工艺、钱文、版别到合金配比等方面，均达到了巅峰。而此时期最有代表性的又首推崇宁通宝，以其钱文俊美、铸造精湛而征服世人。

此崇宁通宝为方孔圆钱，正面旋读“崇宁通宝”四字，其钱文为宋徽宗赵佶御书瘦金体，是以此钱又被成为“御书钱”，运笔流畅，笔划横直竖立，起顿有力，深竣挺拔，铁划银钩，深具骨秀格清之气韵，刚柔相济，可谓十分的潇洒隽美，是徽宗瘦金书体存留世间的真实显现，堪为典范。
