徐世昌早年中举人,后中进士。自袁世凯小站练兵时就为袁世凯的谋士,并为盟友,互为同道;光绪三十一年(1905年)曾任军机大臣。徐世昌颇得袁世凯的器重,在袁世凯称帝时以沉默远离之。民国五年(1916年)3月袁世凯被迫取消帝制,起用他为国务卿。民国七年(1918年)10月,徐世昌被国会选为民国大总统。他下令对南方停战,次年召开议和会议。民国十一年(1922年)6月通电辞职,退隐天津租界以书画自娱,被后人称为“文治总统”。民国二十八年(1939年)6月5日,徐世昌病故,年85岁,先寄葬于天津桃园村原英国公墓,后同夫人一起归葬于河南省辉县市百泉镇苏门山下。
