宝浙局自顺治六年杭州府局开设以来，至咸丰年间发生太平天国起义，当时江南地区是清军与太平军的主要战场，浙江大部分被太平军占领，连省城杭州也被太平军攻占，全省唯衢州完独。为解决军费问题，清政府咸丰五年从杭州迁局于衢州，二月开始铸咸丰大钱，有当十、二十、三十、四十、五十、当百及小平钱，以记所铸省名也，以资军用。
由于咸丰当十钱属于大型古钱币，而且具有多局，多版，多字体，多纹记多材质等奇异特点，此枚钱币字迹清晰深俊，铜材优良，呈浅紫黄色，钱文精美，没一丝一毫拖泥带水，正面铸“咸丰重宝”楷体；背面书汉文“十”字在最上。钱文高挺，字口峻深，地章平洁，字的笔划之间没有丝毫粘连。满文“咸丰重宝”四字，笔划走势匀当，布局凝重，字根穿口特深，并有明显的雕痕，穿廓有一定的拔模度，四角有决意，背“十”相配，较为协调。具有较高的文化历史意义与收藏价值。
