咸丰元宝种类种类较多，是在清文宗（1831-1861）年间清政府面临内忧外患，太平天国起义和列强侵略导致朝廷财政困难，军费等其他开支入不敷出时铸造兴起。但在铸造中期官员发生争论，所以咸丰元宝发行量并不多！且由于其铸造精美，当为中国古钱币的一朵奇葩，被泉学名家孙仲汇先生誉为“清钱之王”，对研究当时的社会历史文化及经济发展具有非常特殊的意义，也极富美学欣赏价值。
