陨石在大气层中燃烧磨蚀，形状多浑圆而无棱无角。熔坑：陨石外表都布有大小不一、深浅不等的凹坑，即熔蚀坑。不少陨石还具有浅而长条形气印，可能是低熔点矿藏脱落留下的。熔壳：陨石在通过大气层时，极高的温度导致陨石外表熔融，产生了一层微米至毫米级别玻璃质层，这便是熔壳。当陨石在地表存在较长时刻后，其熔壳易被风化而消失掉。比重：陨石由于含铁镍比重较大，铁陨石比重可达8，石陨石也因常含20铁镍，比一般岩石比重也大些。可是，存在极少量的石质陨石（如碳质球粒陨石等）因不含或金属含量极低，其密度与一般地球岩石类似。磁性：各种陨石因含有铁而具强度不等的磁性。经风化的陨石没有磁性，因而也就不算陨石了。条痕：陨石在无釉瓷板上冲突一般没有条痕或仅有浅灰色条痕，而铁矿石的条痕则是黑色或棕红色，以此加以差异。璃陨石的成因：玻璃陨石到底是怎样组成的，现在尚有很大争议。一部分科学家认为是无限的陨石或彗星（核）碰击地球，使地球表面物质熔融，溅射到空中，急速冷却而成。但是直到现在为止，对澳亚区和北美区的玻璃陨石群，并未找到呼应的陨石坑，从玻璃陨石分布的普遍性来看，这种观点也值得嫌疑；也有一部分人认为，玻璃陨石是从宇宙空间下降到地球大气层的玻璃雨，以致有人眼见了这种玻璃陨石的下降。玻璃陨石易碎，决裂后多具贝壳状断口。内地上发现的玻璃陨石的大小，从几毫米至十几公分不等，反射光下发暗，但薄的边沿透亮，并具有不相同的色彩，从黄色到绿色，从橄榄褐色到暗褐色。微玻璃陨石只在海洋沉积物中有发现，其大小大小从数毫米到约40微米以下。与相近内地上的玻璃陨石具有相同的年岁、组成和形状
