张铁林80年代初，赴英国留学，90年代初加入香港电影工作室和卫星电视中文台。参加了《黄飞鸿》系列电影的拍摄1996年，转入凤凰卫视主持电影专栏:1997年，导演故事片《椅子) 1998年，在清装宫延剧(还珠格格》中饰演’ 皇阿玛”，为广大观众所熟知2001年，开始与张国立、王刚形成“铁三角“，主演了系列古装剧(铁齿铜牙纪晓岚》等2003年在金庸武侠剧《倚天唐龙记》中饰演杨逍2006年主演古装喜剧《铁将军阿贵).2009年主演电影《白银帝国).2012年在革命史诗剧《红军东征》中饰毛泽东。
