清顺治四年河南开封设钱局，是为宝河局。顺治六年因怀庆有铜、煤而移至怀庆府。设炉十八座，顺治十四年停，所铸钱背为“河”字。十七年又开，康熙元年又开铸康熙钱，旋停。康熙六年复开，九年停，二十四年重开。至雍正七年开铸雍正通宝钱，背满文“宝河”，九年停。乾隆、嘉庆、道光三朝宝河局未开铸。咸丰四年七月开铸当千、五百、百、五十、当十各值钱。

此枚钱币其面文“咸丰元宝”四字，直读，背满文“宝和”与汉文“当五百”几字，除满文外，汉字皆楷书书体。品其书相，可感其楷书书写颇见功力，起收有顿，转折见锋，笔划横直竖立，文字大小与布局规矩协调，整体（面背汉文）书意潇洒大方，凸显端庄俊朗，背满文书写亦是规矩有力。其中，可见其“咸”字和“寳”字书相更具个性特征，“咸”字长勾，“寳”字“大足貝”，与谱载雕母相似度很高，宝河局大钱书相之个性风格凸显。故以其书相而言，乃宝和官炉所出，无异无邪，其门得开矣。
