1911年，辛亥革命胜利推翻了满清皇权的统治，孙中山先生在南京就任临时大总统，并在1912年3月颁布了鼓铸造新式货币的法令。全国各地既开始铸造民国图案的新式铜元，湖南省是武昌起义后全国最早宣布脱离满清统治，宣告独立的省份之一，在这种政局形势的发展下，湖南省造币厂铸造了一批铸工十分精致的当十”湖南铜元"铜币。

In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the rule of the imperial power of the Qing Dynasty. Sun Yat-sen took office as the temporary president in Nanjing. In March 1912, he issued the law of drum casting new currency. All over the country, new copper coins with the pattern of the Republic of China began to be minted. Hunan Province was one of the first provinces to declare its independence from the rule of the Manchu Dynasty after the Wuchang Uprising. Hunan Tongyuan is a 19 star edition. On the obverse of the coin, there is a small five petaled flower star on the top of the bead circle and a value of "Dangshi" on the bottom. In the bead circle, there is a four character inscription of "Hunan Tongyuan". In the middle is a six petaled flower ornament, and six petals are decorated with two types of "big six petaled flower" and "small six petaled flower"; on the back of the coin, there is an English provincial name of "Hu-nan" on the bead circle, and on the bottom is a value of "ten cash". A small five petaled flower star is decorated on the left and right, a "nine pointed star" is carved in the bead circle, and nine 18 stars are carved in the inner and outer circles of the nine pointed star, also known as the "nine pointed star chart", or the "iron blood star chart", symbolizing the 18 independent provinces in the Central Plains at that time.
