范曾，字十翼，江苏南通人，中国近现代著名学者、书画家、诗人，1938年生于书香之家，自幼即学习历史、文学和绘画，1959年考入天津南开大学历史系。两年后转入中央美院研究美术史，后又转入中国画系学习。他先后师从吴作人、李可染、蒋兆和、李苦禅、刘凌沧诸位名家，深得教益。曾在中央工艺美术学院任教，后又筹建南开大学东方艺术系，任系主任。1979年他首访日本，被日本誉为“近代中国十大画家之一”。1982年获日中文化交流功劳纪念杯。近几年范曾的绘画市场人气指数骤涨，价格不断攀升，这是不争的客观事实。书画得到社会的认可，知名度和美誉度也大幅度提升。从1984年，日本冈山范曾美术馆建立；1986年，捐建并主持南开大学东方艺术系；2008年，南通大学范曾艺术馆揭牌；2011年，荣获中华艺文奖终身成就奖。有二十四字自评：痴于绘画，能书；偶为辞章，颇抒己怀；好读书史，略通古今之变。范曾的笔墨深处似乎都有着一缕诗魂的回荡，而这与他自幼生长于诗人之世家、一直接受着诗歌环境之熏陶培养，自然有着密切的关系。若就今日一般之画家言之，则欲求一有不羁之才如范曾者固已极为难遇，若欲更求一有文学诗歌之修养如范曾者，则更属难能。范曾先生不仅工书善画，而且能诗，其所自作之诗篇亦复才气纵横迥出俗尘之外，世称“三绝”，范曾先生自可当之而无愧。
