光绪元宝主要始于光绪二十六年（1900）至光绪三十一年（1905）。这一时期各地造币均有光绪元宝字样。总厂造币在正面左右分列“户部”二字，各地均在正面上缘或左右分列省名及地名，以示区别。这一时期各厂局各尽所能，自行设计，出现了一大批具有各地特点的龙图、花式，是铜元品种最多、图案最丰富、版式最繁杂的时期。光绪为清朝第一位使用机器铸造钱币的皇帝。作为清朝第一批机制币，光绪元宝的历史价值也是非常之高。光绪元宝是清末实行变革制度的产物，其规划新颖，制造精巧，是钱币爱好者的珍藏品。

湖北省造币厂是继广东造币厂之后，较早自铸银币的省份之一。昔时两广总督张之洞在建设广东造币厂之后奉旨转督两湖，于光绪十九年（公元1893年）奏准在湖北武昌设立造币厂，银币初铸时龙图左右两根须长短不一，与外省有所区别，后因窒碍难行，收回再铸时，将左右两龙须改平长重铸，未销毁重铸而留存至今者屈指可数，并且多为磨损或打戳，此等品相及其罕见。银元在窒碍难行的状态下很快便退出流通并被销毁重铸，留存至今者寥寥无几。银元龙图左右两根须长短不一的应有五种，目前仅见壹元、二角及一角三种，数量之罕可想而知，好品尤为珍贵难得。

此枚光绪元宝湖北省造当十铸造于公元1902年（光绪二十八年）左右。此枚藏品正面圈内铸有铭文“光绪元宝”，珠圈外上环铸楷体“湖北省造”四字，底部铸货币价值：“当十”。元宝背面内圈铸有神龙腾飞图腾，外圈铸有英文，品相精致，其审美风格独特。钱币虽小，也可管窥当时社会文化一斑。钱币保存十分完整。
