民国三年铸造的袁世凯银币有很多不同的版本，在正面的图案是基本相同的，但是在背面的图案和一些细节方面还是有所不同的，辛亥革命以后，袁世凯就任“临时大总统”之职，后又成为正式大总统。

当时，为了巩固国内政局稳定，发展民族经济，也为“制宪”和“称帝”作准备，于是发布《国币条例》，毅然决定在全国“统一币制”。民国三年版正面为袁世凯侧面像，上列“中华民国三年”。“回年”字后没有“造”字，其他年版都在“年”字后面有一“造”字。三年版“民”字中有一“点”，而其他年版民字无“点”。铸造量较少的版别有：“O”记版、粗发版、三角圆版、开口贝版、加铸“甘肃”两字版、背双星版、大胡须版、大耳朵版等。

加铸“甘肃”两字的袁大头出自民国时期的甘肃地区毋庸置疑。此币沿用民国三年版旧模，在袁像左右加铸“甘肃”两字，其余与开口贝版相同，铸量仅数万枚，是袁大头当中的名誉品，存世的相当稀少，以其制作精美、特征明显、版式众多、发行量少等优点，一直深受广大银元爱好者的追捧。
