开元通宝为唐代货币。钱币在唐代始有“通宝”。唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年，为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。

许多人都认为开元通宝是年号钱，理由是唐玄宗李隆基有个年号是开元，这是错误的。开元通宝是非年号钱，在唐代初年就已经铸造，是由欧阳询亲自题字，欧阳询是初唐人物，而李隆基生于盛唐，二人生活年代相差百余年，从年代上讲，欧阳询就不可能给李隆基的铸钱题字。而李隆基将年号定为开元，纯属巧合。

开元通宝的形制不但成了后世小平钱的基本铸式，还被沿袭了一千三百年之久，开元通宝控制下的通货状况良好，开元通宝的出现，开元宝、通宝方孔圆钱之先河，宣告了自秦以来流通了八百多年来的铢两货币的结束。从此，我国的方孔圆钱多以通宝、元宝相称，亦即宝文钱的开始。它的文字、重量、形制均成为后世铸钱的楷模。如五代的周元通宝，宋代的宋元通宝都模仿了开元通宝的文字形制。
