周元通宝是五代十国货币，始铸于周世宗显德二年。周世宗柴荣继位后，为筹措军饷，安抚百姓，于登基之初下令毁佛，将佛寺中的铜像销毁，铸成“周元通宝”。

周元通宝作为毁佛钱的一种，周元通宝在中国钱币史和宗教发展史上都产生过深远而重大的影响。周元通宝是五代十国时期后周的钱币，也是公认的五代钱币中做工较为精美的钱币。周元通宝用佛铜铸造，辟邪效果好，民间有些偏方还将其入药以用治病。

As a kind of money destroying Buddhism, the Tongbao of Zhou Yuan had a profound and significant influence on the history of Chinese coins and religion. The Tongbao of Zhou Yuan is the coin of the Later Zhou Dynasty in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, and it is also recognized that the coins of the Five Dynasties are of exquisite workmanship. The Tongbao of Zhou Yuan was made of Buddhist bronze, which had good effect of eliminating evil spirits. Some folk preions also used it as medicine to cure diseases.

周元通宝花钱属于五代十国花钱的一种，此花钱周元通宝仿唐开元钱，隶书钱文深峻，宽缘细部，鎏金铸造，做工致精湛，正面“周元通宝”，背“伏虎罗汉”，多系后世所铸祥瑞钱。周世宗在位只有6年，显德二年才先铸币，只铸造了5年，再加上部分黎民入药和千年的毁损，目前存世量稀少，收藏价值及高。

The official script of Qian Wen is deep and strict, with wide margin details. It is forged with gold and exquisite workmanship. The "Joo Won  Tongbao" on the front and the "Ocean's Tiger" on the back are mostly auspicious money forged by later generations. Zhou Shizong's reign lasted only 6 years, Xiande minted coins only 2 years and only 5 years. In addition, some Li people were used as medicine and destroyed for 1,000 years. At present, they are rare in the world and have high collection value.

周元通宝始铸于周世宗显德二年（公元955年），是五代时期铸行最多、质量最好的铜钱。当时铜材紧缺，周世宗便下令毁佛，但遭到佛教徒和满朝的反对。可周世宗柴荣才智过人，搬出了“舍身饲虎”的典故，他说：“佛祖说以身世为轻，以利和为急，使其真身尚在，敬利于世，犹欲割截，岂有所惜哉！”意思是说，佛是造福众生的，假如他活者，为了救人，他的真身都可毁去，又为何舍不得铜像呢？此番言论，说得反对者哑口无言，只好服从。作为毁佛钱的一种，周元通宝在中国钱币史和宗教发展史上都产生过深远而重大的影响。

When copper was in short supply, Zhou Shizong ordered the Buddha to be destroyed, but Buddhists and Manchuria opposed it. However, Zhou Shizong and Chai Rong were extremely intelligent and cited the story of "giving up one's life to feed a tiger." He said, "Buddha said that life experience is the most important thing, and peace is the most important thing, so that his true self is still alive and he respects the world. He still wants to cut off. Is there any pity?" It means that Buddha benefits all living beings. If he lives, his real body can be destroyed in order to save others, why can't he give up the bronze statue? These remarks made the opponents speechless and had to obey. As a kind of money to destroy Buddhism, Joo Won  Tongbao had a far-reaching and significant impact on the history of Chinese coins and religion.

此枚周元通宝花钱：一、 正面周元通宝”四字，侧边花是为稻穗纹，纹饰吉祥，不可多见。二、背部是为凸纹饰，雕工精美，栩栩如生，充分体现了古代人在铸钱工艺方面技艺精湛。三、钱币的表面颜色呈黑色，带有绿色的斑点，包浆自然，足以体现出了它的陈旧感，为传世珍品，不可多得。四：由于该钱系铜佛所铸，其背后也有一段民间传说：佩之能得神灵保佑、祛病消灾，从而蒙上了一层神秘色彩。真可谓中华古钱币博大精深，其价值不可估量。

由于周元通宝含有佛像铜的特征，后朝补铸以祈求佛祖保佑，多见于清代、民国，东北地区盛行。这种高浮雕的铸钱风格工艺难度高，比较费铜，所以铸造量非常稀少。
