“一刀平五千”刀币，分为环柄和刀身两部分，环柄为一方孔圆钱，环文上曰“一”，下曰“刀”，字为阴刻，字陷处填以黄金，并且加以打磨，使字面与钱面平齐。刀身上铸有阳文“平五千”三字，其中“平”是“值”的意思，即表示一枚刀币价值等于五千。值得注意的是，这枚刀币的造型独具韵味，丝毫未拘泥于春秋战国时代刀币形制，彼时尖首刀形制。古拙稳重，并透露出秀美气息。币面铭文“一刀平五千”五字书写流畅，气势生动，毫不呆滞，承袭了战国时期币面铭文“一笔过”的特征，新莽钱币，钱文纤细，工艺讲究，钱币版别较多，但钱文大体以悬针篆为主，文体有精有粗，粗者文字平夷，制作较逊，精者轮廓斜削，笔划细挺。
