天珠又称“天眼珠”，是一种极富民族和宗教色彩、蕴含神秘传说并含有特殊磁场的稀有珠宝。天珠的材质其实是沉积岩的一种，叫九眼石页岩，因其含有玉质及玛瑙成分，被认为是一种稀有宝石。我国西藏自治区地属喜马拉雅山脉，石质中含有九眼石页岩，藏民将浓厚的宗教信仰赋予石上，磨制加工成大小不等的各色天珠。

中国古书关于天珠的记载早于唐太宗贞观十五年(公元641年)，文成公主下嫁吐番时，将一尊佛像作为陪嫁，其佛冠镶有九眼天珠、虎纹天珠、宝瓶天珠、二眼天珠和三眼天珠。这尊佛至今仍放在大昭寺内，自此，天珠即成为历代王公贵族进贡之皇室稀世珍品。

关于天珠是珍贵药材，可以治疗疾病的记载，始见藏医经典《四部医典》。据介绍，这部医典中记载的很多珍宝类药品里就会有“九眼石”成分(九眼石即天珠)。天珠作为矿物玉石类入药，在中医典籍中早有记载，明代李时珍的《本草纲目·金石部》就有此类记述。在藏药《晶珠本草》明确指出天珠与人造天珠的区别：“瑟治，镇痛。瑟新品很少，容易辨认。虎伏块状，有黑色花纹、黄色花纹、褐色花纹相杂，纹长，斑小。人工造的花纹扭曲，注意不要相混。真品虎伏块状，纹长九倍。用来擦眼，利眼病。用凉水泡一夜，水可止血痛;内服治病入血分;也可入内服药。涂在箭头上，镇邪。带在身上可预防”。

As a kind of mineral jade, Tianzhu has long been recorded in TCM classics, such as the compendium of Materia Medica · Jinshi department by Li Shizhen in Ming Dynasty. In the Tibetan medicine "Jingzhu Materia Medica", it is clearly pointed out that the difference between Tianzhu and artificial Tianzhu is: "sedative, analgesic. It's easy to identify. Hufu massive, black patterns, yellow patterns, brown patterns mixed, long patterns, small spots. The artificial patterns are twisted. Be careful not to mix them up. The genuine tiger Fu block, nine times the length of the pattern. It's used to wipe eyes and benefit eye diseases. Soak in cold water overnight, the water can stop the pain; take it orally to treat the disease into the blood; it can also be taken orally. Put it on the arrow to suppress evil. It can be prevented by wearing it on your body.
