在中国印石界，“南血北地”之名早已流行至盛。“南血”指昌化鸡血，“北地”指巴林鸡血，它们是目前世界两大最著名的鸡血石品种，是公认最美的两朵“娇艳之花”。巴林鸡血石是约1.3亿年前的晚侏罗纪时期火山爆发时，因朱砂（硫化汞）渗透到高岭石中、地开石之中共生、交融而缓慢形成的，是极为罕见的天然宝玉石。巴林鸡血的开采应用历史，可追溯至距今5000-6000前的红山文化时期，但原始社会生产力低下，都是地表拣拾而得。20世纪，在昌化鸡血石遭遇“炼汞浩劫”之前，巴林鸡血曾在日军侵华时期遭遇“强盗洗劫”。直到1973年，巴林石矿才在周恩来总理的关怀下，正式建矿，恢复开采。至今，已整整44个年头。

那么，巴林鸡血石到底美在哪里呢？一是地子美：鸡血石由“地”和“血”两部分组成，“血”的矿物成分主要是辰砂。“地“的成分以地开石为主，也含有相当量的高岭石、明矾石、埃洛石、石英、黄铁矿等。与其他鸡血石品种不同，巴林鸡血石以冻地为主，地子通灵清秀，从透明、微透明至半透明、不透明全有，此外还有白玉地、福黄地、玻璃地等等，有的冰清玉洁、有的温润凝重、有的纯粹细腻、有的娇嫩爽滑，完全具备冻、透、净的优秀特质，非常适合篆刻、雕刻及创作高档艺术品。二是血形美：巴林鸡血石因其地子的天然冻性，而使其血形格外灵动、飘逸，具有生命气息。按形态分，有片红、条红、斑红、点红、团红等数种。片红如彩云追月，条红如彩练劲舞，斑红如锦上添花，点红如落英缤纷，团红如红霞漫天……

三是血色美：巴林鸡血石按照血色分，有鲜红、大红、暗红等等。更为称奇的是，其多变的血色配以上佳的地子和血形，造成了一大批知名的鸡血石品种，如：少女般柔美的女儿红、视觉冲击强烈的夕阳红、娇美艳丽的胭脂红、灿烂明亮的金银红、肤若凝脂的羊脂红等等。巴林鸡血石的命名，通常都是以血和地的色彩命名。因此，每一个优质品种都是血与地的完美结晶，是观赏与收藏的佳品。
