世人评此为“宋代第一泉”，与新莽并称中国钱发“二圣”公元1100年1月，北宋皇帝哲宗病故，由其弟赵佶接替做了北宋第八任皇帝，为宋徽宗。徽宗“性甚机巧，优于技艺”，终日沉迷于书法绘画，不理朝纲。他在位25年，先后铸造了圣宋通宝、崇宁通宝(重宝)、大观通宝、政和通宝(重宝)、重和通宝、宣和通宝(元宝)等6种钱币，其中最有市场价值的就是“崇宁通宝”、“崇宁重宝”这两枚古钱币。

During his 25 years in office, he successively minted six kinds of coins, such as Shengsong Tongbao, Chongning Tongbao (Chongbao), Daguan Tongbao, Zhenghe Tongbao (Chongbao), Zhonghe Tongbao and Xuanhe Tongbao (Yuanbao), among which the two ancient coins with the most market value are Chongning Tongbao and Chongning Chongbao.

崇宁重宝，系北宋徽宗崇宁年间铸(公元1102年-1106年)，铜币正面镌刻着“崇宁重宝”，字体为隶书，端庄雄秀，古朴方正，严谨庄重，法度固定，字里行间留在钱币上的，是腐蚀钱币的铁锈;铜币背面则没有印制任何的字体。钱币的中央部分，是打孔的正方形图案，方正大方，落落得体，轮廓立体，这种钱币铸造形状便于老百姓将其串起来挂在身上，不易丢失。该铜币整体制作精良，版面清晰秀美，文字方正，保存良好，在经过时间的洗礼，岁月的冲刷后成古铜色，包浆自然，更富有其浓厚的历史感。

关于“崇宁重宝”，有一个传说，谓其面文为蔡京所书，而蔡京书写时别有用心地将“崇”字的山和宗的竖笔上下贯通，连成一线;将“宁”字繁体之中的“心”省略，被人指责为“有意破宋，无心宁国”。“崇宁”钱存世尚多，版别亦多，但迄今并未发现有如上所说这种写法的钱币。
