手炉发源于隋唐时期，经过宋元明清的不断发展，一直到清朝末年，手炉的工艺水平已达到顶峰，其也成为人们冬天时的必备生活用具之一。清朝著名文人张劭曾专门写过一首诗吟咏《手炉》，“松灰笼暖袖先知，银叶香飘篆一丝。顶伴梅花平出网，展环竹节卧生枝。不愁冻玉棋难捻，且喜元霜笔易持。纵使诗家寒到骨，阳春腕底已生姿。”
