碳质球粒陨石是一种较为少的陨石品种,大部分碳质球粒陨石的颜色较深,他们的熔壳呈深灰色至黑色,它们的内部同样呈黑色,整体有点像木炭的黑。碳质球粒陨石的这一区别其它陨石的色泽,让人们很容易认为碳质球粒陨石是由碳组成,就连没深入研究过它们的研究员们,最开始也以为碳质球粒陨石含有大量的碳,而事实证明并非如此,碳的含量并不是碳质球粒陨石的识别特征,而它们的镁、钙、铝相对于硅的丰度成为了区别普通球粒陨石的关键。
