金农 字寿门，号冬心，又司农等，仁和（今杭州）人。流寓扬州。精鉴赏、工书画。诗文金石。书法工隶楷。隶以朴厚见长，楷含隶意，自成一格，号称“漆书”。五十岁后始作画，山水人物、佛像鞍马、梅竹信笔挥写，形象拙朴，构图新颖，皆成别有心裁之作，为世人称许。被称为扬州八家首席。

金农的鞍马画继承唐人，能在韩干等人写实的基础上又注重意象，将笔墨的表现形式加以适当的夸张、变形，这使得他笔下的马既具备了唐人画马的烈性与彪悍，又显示出金氏画马“迥立阊阖生长风”的俊逸风骨。此画墨色浓淡相交，拙朴厚重的线条色勒出马的风韵，天马威武、强壮、俊逸、飘洒的形象跃然纸上。金农的字得力于《天发神谶碑》和龙门造像等碑，融合汉隶、魏楷，画中书法用笔方正、棱角分明、结构紧凑、体势欹侧是其楷书中的佳作。秦祖永《桐阴论画》评金农的画“涉笔即古，脱尽画家习气”，此画足可为铁证。
