鬼谷子下山的故事出自《战国策》。故事说的是战国时期，燕国和齐国交战，为齐国效命的孙膑为敌方所擒，他的师傅鬼谷子前往营救，率领众人一行下山。这件元青花人物扁壶“鬼谷子下山”描绘的便是鬼谷子下山的情景，鬼谷子坐在由狮虎共拉的两轮车上。后面跟着两个骑马的人，其中一个穿着武官衣服打了一面旗写有“鬼谷”两字。整个青花纹饰共分四层，第一层颈部：饰水波纹；第二层肩部：饰缠枝牡丹；第三层腹部：为“鬼谷子下山”主题纹饰；第四层下部：为变形莲瓣纹内绘琛宝，俗称“八大码”。

此件元青花珍品----“鬼谷子下山”青花扁壶是敝人十多年前偶遇所得，该器形制作规整，釉色莹润，胎体厚重较适中。素底胎骨显麻仓土质，圈足斜削较浅，有明显旋纹。通体共有四组纹饰组成，主体纹饰为历史人物故事“鬼谷子下山”的情景为主，另外三组为辅助纹饰。
