圆明园十二生肖兽首铜像原为圆明园海晏堂外的喷泉的一部分，是清乾隆年间的红铜铸像。1860年英法联军侵略中国，火烧圆明园，兽首铜像开始流失海外。

The bronze statue of animal heads of the twelve Zodiacs in Yuanmingyuan was originally a part of the fountain outside Haiyan Hall in Yuanmingyuan, and it was a red bronze statue cast during the reign of Qianlong in Qing Dynasty. In 1860, the Anglo-French allied forces invaded China, burning the Yuanmingyuan, and the bronze statues of animal heads began to be lost overseas.

到2012年为止牛首、猴首、虎首、猪首、和马首铜像已回归中国，收藏在保利艺术博物馆；2013年4月26日，法国皮诺家族在北京宣布将向中方无偿捐赠流失海外的圆明园十二大水法中的青铜鼠首和兔首。此次捐赠的鼠首、兔首，为北京圆明园流失的十二生肖青铜像中的两件。 [1] 目前，圆明园十二大水法中的十二大生肖兽首已经有8个回归中国，其中龙首目前在台湾保存完好，不过蛇首、鸡首、狗首、羊首则下落不明。

2005年1月18日，由中国集邮总公司发行的“国宝之魂”－－圆明园十二生肖兽首铜像邮品正式亮相。参与设计的中华抢救流失海外文物专项基金呼吁全社会贡献力量，共促流失海外国宝的回归。

“国宝之魂”－－圆明园十二生肖兽首铜像邮品由12枚邮票和4枚版卡组成。当时4件已被抢救回国的国宝均使用了实物照片，并制作了版卡，包括牛首、虎首、猴首、猪首。但另外的鼠首、兔首、龙首、蛇首、马首、羊首、鸡首和狗首等八件生肖铜像，或仍流失海外，或一直未现影踪，因而在邮品中采用了由中华抢救的兽首。“这虽说是一大遗憾，但也警醒人们：尚需通过不懈的努力，尽早让十二生肖铜像重新聚首故里，”中华抢救流失海外文物专项基金主任张永年说。

圆明园兽首铜像为什么珍贵?乾隆盛世，清王朝国力强盛，工艺水平处于巅峰，这在圆明园十二生肖兽首铜像上表现得尤为充分。
