袁大头银元辛亥革命以后，袁世凯就任“临时大总统”之职，后又成为正式大总统。当时，为了巩国内政局稳定，发展民族经济，也为“制宪”和“称帝”作准备，于是毅然决定在全国“统一币制”。是年（民国3年，即1914年），制定了“中华民国国币条例”，于是大量收购旧币，在天津造币总厂和武昌、广州、南京等分厂按规格、重量等铸造袁世凯头像银币，全国通用，逐渐取代了“大清银币”等银币。

民国三年版正面为袁世凯侧面像，上列“中华民国三年”。“年”字后没有“造”字，其他年版都在“年”字后面有一“造”字。三年版“民”字中有一“点”，而其他年版民字无“点”。三年版有老模和新模两种模具，老模具为185道边齿，新模具为170道边齿，铸量都较多，属普通流通版。铸造量较少的版别有：（1）“O”记版。即在嘉禾图案中有“O”形暗记，在嘉禾结带处呈横“8”字形，左上方的带孔中有一极小的“O”形圆圈，而且袁像下巴前衣领未封领，肩章较宽，五星比较凸出。The front of the three-year edition of the Republic of China is a profile of yuan Shikai, listed above as "the three years of the Republic of China". 钱币正面为袁世凯左侧面像，上列“中华民国三年”六字，“民”字上多一点，字体清秀，挺拔俊逸；钱币背面两条嘉禾左右相交，下系结带，中铸“壹圆”字样，钱文清晰，浮雕感强烈。表面包浆醇厚，设计简约，端庄高雅，质感甚佳，历史遗留痕迹鲜明，岁月沉淀丰富，是价值很高的历史文物。目前民间留存的“袁大头”数量已经不算太多，而且银属于贵金属，收藏风险较小，非常适合投资和收藏。"
