顺治通宝是满清入关后铸行的第一种钱币，最初为仿明钱铸币，逐步完善成了满清币制，在清代钱币中独具特色，此后清朝历代的铸币都是依照顺治钱式铸造。顺治元年，在北京于工部、户部开设宝源局、宝泉局铸币，上用楷书写着"顺治通宝"。顺治通宝的币型未能统一，按照背文可分为五种，也就是"顺治五式"。
康熙通宝铸于清圣祖康熙年间。钱面文字“康熙通宝”以楷书书写。背面文字主要两大类：一类是仿"顺治四式"的满文钱，钱背满文"宝泉"、"宝源"左读。另一类是仿"顺治五式"满汉文钱。康熙在位的61年里，全国共开设了铸钱局24处。每一文康熙通宝钱币在当时的制造标准分别是重一钱四分、一钱、七分，所以我们今天看到的“康熙通宝”钱也分大、中、小三种不同的重量。
乾隆通宝铸于清高宗乾隆年间，钱面文字"乾隆通宝"以楷书书写。钱背文字沿雍正满文钱式穿孔左边有"宝"字，穿孔右边铸有各局名。乾隆通宝因乾隆二字谐音“钱隆”而备受后世藏家所喜爱。“乾隆通宝”当时发行时间较长，铸量极大且加之流传至今时间较短，是现代世界中露脸频率最高的一种古钱币。
嘉庆通宝铸于清仁宗嘉庆年间。钱面文字"嘉庆通宝"以楷书书写，从上而下而右而左直读。钱背满文左"宝"，右记局名19字（如泉、源、苏、河、广等）。少数钱背星月纹以及记地或祥瑞汉字(如：桂、福、寿、康、宁)，吉语背文如："天子万岁"、"国泰民安"、"天下太平"、"日日生财"、"嘉庆万岁"、"唯和唯一"、"如卖三倍"、"四方来贺"、"五世同堂"等多达20种，为历代古泉所仅见。
“顺治”的“顺”寓意顺利、遂心；“康熙”的“康”寓意健康、平安；“乾隆”的“乾”与“钱”谐音，符合人们对富裕生活向往意愿；“嘉庆”的“嘉”寓意完美和谐；道光谐音“倒光”、“盗光”，就目前来讲，古钱界很多人还是喜欢寓意好的钱币。
