鸡血石，中国“四大国石”。同寿山石、青田石、巴林石并列。鸡血石与田黄石、青田灯光冻石被誉为印石三宝，主要用作为印章或是工艺雕刻品材料。
 

鸡血石是由“地”和“血”两部组成。一般认为“血”的矿物成分主要是辰砂。“地“的成分，如昌化鸡血石。
 

鸡血石的形成是因朱砂（硫化汞）渗透到高岭石中，地开石之中缓慢而成，形成时间可与化石同等，这样两者交融，共生一体的天然宝石，在国内外是极为罕见的一种。也有的鸡血石是含有‘橄榄石’辉石凝结而成。

鸡血的成份是硫化汞，石质则为地开石或高岭石，硬度为2—3度。石中时常带有水银斑及少量的石英颗粒突起于石表面。鸡血中除主要成份为硫化汞外，还含有少量的致色元素铁、钛。
 

鸡血石含有辰砂、(朱砂)、石英、方解石、辉锑矿、地开石、高岭石、白云石等矿物，且大部分含硫化汞等多种成份的硫化物以及硅酸盐矿物。产地不同，质地成分也不同，但都离不开硫化汞成分，也有‘氧化铁’的橄榄石成分。
 

昌化鸡血石可分为冻地、软地、刚地和硬地四大类。冻地鸡血石为玻璃冻、羊脂冻、牛角冻、桃花冻等，微透明或半透明，硬度在2—3级。软地鸡血石的硬度为2—4级，刚地鸡血石是高岭石、明矾石岩经后期硅化的产物，硬度在4—7级。而此件鸡血石为（昌化刚地）硬度在4—6级。

The formation of bloodstone is due to the penetration of cinnabar (mercury sulfide) into the kaolinite, which is slowly formed in the open stone.
