袁世凯（1859年9月16日－1916年6月6日），字慰亭（又作慰庭），号容庵，汉族，河南项城人，是中国近代史上著名的政治人物。曾是北洋军阀的领导人，在辛亥革命后，与南方革命军有约，只要推翻清帝奉袁世凯为大总统，袁世凯履行承诺，逼宣统退位。成为中华民国首任大总统，后复辟称帝被推翻。他曾担任过满清王朝的军机大臣、驻朝鲜的代理总督。

1912年4月袁世凯出任大总统。北洋政府鉴于当时铸币、纸币十分复杂，流通的中外货币在百种以上，规格不一，流通混乱，折算繁琐，民众积怨，同时也想借助货币改制以解决军费问题，便决定铸发国币。袁世凯为了提高自己的统治地位，趁机把他的头像铸于币面，“袁大头”由此而来。
