　　袁大头是民国时期主要流通货币之一，“袁大头”是对袁世凯像系列硬币的口语俗称，严谨点说叫“袁世凯像背嘉禾银币”。"袁大头"在货币收藏界被称为银元之宝，是中国近千种近代银币中流传最广、影响最大的银元品种，也是近代中国币制变革中的一个重要角色。

　　在中华民国成立之初，币制十分混乱，流通市场上银币、铜币、纸币和钞票一起流通使用。民国三年（1914年），北洋军阀政府正式铸造袁世凯头像银币，因币上铸有袁世凯侧身头像，故民间俗称“袁大头”。“袁大头”钱币共有四种面值：壹圆、中圆(五角)、贰角、壹角，其中壹圆“袁大头”最为常见。“袁大头”首次的铸造时间是民国三年，而且该币被定为中华民国国币，因此，它在我国的钱币史上具有非常重要的地位。民国三年版正面为袁世凯侧面像，上列“中华民国三年”。“年”字后没有“造”字，其他年版都在“年”字后面有一“造”字。三年版“民”字中有一“点”，而其他年版民字无“点”。九年版中主要有袁像未封领版和大耳版两种；前者为普通版，铸量较多，后者铸量较少。大耳版指袁像耳朵比其他版要大，而衣领全封领。钱币的版面设计优雅，而且存世量极为稀少，是收藏界精品，知名度极大的一种，具有无法估量的学术与历史价值。
