辽代辽景宗耶律贤保宁年间（969-978）的铸币，是古泉五十名珍之一，存世量极少，版式有大字、小字、宽缘、细缘、狭穿、广穿、背月纹等区别。其钱文右旋读，书体隶兼八分，浑厚朴拙，古意盎然，具有独特的民族风格，可谓影响了整个辽一代钱风。目前，根据相关资料、图谱及所见所闻，保宁通宝平钱的统计存量大约在数十枚之内，是辽钱中的稀见品之一。

该泉直径约3.7cm，重量约为18.6g，赤铜质，钱文旋读，其整体书意，似隶似楷，隶意偏强，隶兼八分书，单点通，光背。铸体稍薄，小平形制。其钱体虽然平小，然仍可见其铸相方圆廓正，坦平地章，穿轮基本干净。续观其字廓，深浅适中，略显平漫，然字廓笔划清晰可辨，自然铸相，本品铸相极具自然之感，毫无做作之态。
