张大千是二十世纪中国画坛最具传奇色彩的国画大师,无论是绘画、书法、篆刻、诗词都无所不通。早期专心研习古人书画,特别在山水画方面卓有成就。后旅居海外,画风工写结合,重彩、水墨融为一体,尤其是泼墨与泼彩,开创了新的艺术风格。

1949年,大千先生前往海外。初至印度,次迁香港,又移南美。30余年来,大千先生往来亚、欧、美诸邦,举办画展,声噪国际,被誉为“当今最负盛名之国画大师”;亦为介绍宣扬我国传统文化艺术,作出了卓著的贡献。大千先生以他渊博的识见,令人敬仰的成就,贏得了各国艺术界、评论界的尊重,增强了中国绘画艺术的世界影响。

此幅作品,观世音菩萨像脸庞丰腴圆润,双眉纤细,红唇金冠,面容端庄,发现庄严,已然化身女性形象,象征平和仁爱、温柔慈祥,与观音菩萨悲悯护生的功德相符。整体来说,画家线条凝练,用笔老道,在中国文化中,母亲是“慈悲”的形象,二观世音菩萨本身所体现的慈悲融入到中国文化木星的特质,也体现了社会文化的观点。

1941年5月,张大千携三夫人杨宛君(后二夫人黄凝素加入)、儿子张心智、侄儿张彼得、学生肖建初和刘力上及几个裱工,后又聘请藏画家索南丹巴的四个弟子等赴敦煌考察研究石窟壁画,面壁两年七个月,临摹了自十六国、两魏、北周、隋、唐、五代、宋、两夏、元等历朝历代的壁画作品达276幅,敦煌石窟艺术从此走向世界,也为其以后的绘画创作,尤其是人物画创作奠定了基础。

1949年以后,张大千开始云游世界,先后移居香港、印度、阿根廷、巴西、美国等国家和地区,晚年定居台湾营建“摩耶精舍”。由此绘画视野大开,并注意研究日本浮士绘及西方立体派艺术的技法,所绘仕女笔法生动,极具时代感,给观者似有息息相通、脉脉传情的感觉,创作风格也逐渐从古典向现实转变。期间,由于旅居海外特别是1957年突患眼疾,仕女画作品数量明显减少,但一生求变求新的张大千,却再度变法独创并成就了泼墨泼彩山水画,开一代中国画新风。
